The project start

The police regularly organize the event “Rowerem do celu” within the campaign of the Polish Ministry of the Interior. 2010-2012 the City of Gdansk co-organized the event together with the Department of Traffic of the Regional Police Headquarters. The “Bicycle Festival and Picnic” were implemented within the CIVITAS MIMOSA project as a kick off for the bicycle summer in Gdansk and the Pomerania Voivodship.

Aim and objectives

The City of Gdansk aims at fostering a positive urban bike culture amongst citizens of Gdansk and Pomerania Region and increasing the awareness of issues related to safety in cycling. Furthermore the car drivers should be sensitized to cyclists as legitimate users of the road. The activities aimed also to encourage children to use bicycles and to learn traffic regulation.

Implementation

In 2011 the event took place on Sunday 29th of May and started with a parade of more than 200 cyclists. The president of Gdansk led the parade from the Neptun fountain in the old town to the pier in the Brzeźno district.

The festival consisted of three components for different target groups. Within the part “Safety on the bicycle” a number of stands in Brzeźno promoted sustainable transport, cycling as a mean of transport, bike safety and offered a bicycle clinic. A lot of space was dedicated to children. They could take part for example in traffic rule competitions, hands-on bike demonstrations, cycling licenses for children, bicycle clinics and first aid shows. Pomeranian music bands played within the part “By bicycle on the concert - Bike'n roll”. The third component of the festival was “By bicycle to the cinema”. Cyclists and cineastes had a chance to see two films in the open air cinema.

PR and documentation:

Special banners and 40,000 flyers were produced and distributed to promote this campaign and other elements of the CIVITAS MIMOSA project. Furthermore 5,000 car air fresheners in a bike-design promoting this campaign were produced.

The press agency of the Municipality of the City of Gdansk was involved in the preparation of press information. An information banner about the campaign was placed on the biggest local internet platform trójmiasto.pl [Tricity]. Additional to this an advertisement in a free-newspaper was published.
