Rostock has achieved a leading position among German cities concerning the development and implementation of cost-saving and efficient measures for cycling promotion through participating in the Interreg III B project Baltic Sea Cycling. Share of cycling has increased from 12 % in 2003 to 20 % in 2008. Rostock likes to share experiences and best practices to improve the conditions of urban sustainable traffic and to intensify capacity building and networking. Rostock is the lead beneficiary in the abc-project.

Rostock has about 203.000 inhabitants. It is the biggest city in Northeast Germany situated at the Baltic Sea between Berlin, Hamburg, Copenhagen and Szczecin.

ADFC Rostock - German Cycling Association Rostock

The ADFC is the main NGO for cyclists in Germany with more than 130.000 members. The ADFC is lobbying for better conditions to cycle and offers cycling tours. The Rostock group was an active partner in the Baltic Sea Cycling project especially working on information, dissemination and promotion.

In the abc-project ADFC Rostock will cooperate closely with the municipality of Rostock for implementing awareness raising activities and participatory processes in the city. ADFC Rostock will concentrate its activities in CP4 on capacity building, especially training volunteers as experts for cycling policy and promotion. The NGO will transfer knowledge and competence from Germany about cyclists’ needs and best practice to all partners. ADFC Rostock will forward information about cycling promotion activities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Germany and reflect project results to members and publicity. Rostock group will inform regional and national ADFC about progress and results of the project.

Kalmar Municipality

Kalmar Municipality is well experienced in bicycle planning, awareness raising, mobility management and general climate issues. Kalmar initiated the Kalmar declaration for further cooperation at the end of the Baltic Sea Cycling project.

In the abc-project Kalmar wants to investigate the share of cyclists to three main areas of commerce and their spending ability through a survey carried out by HUI research (Swedish Institute of Commerce). The main aim of the survey however is to find areas of improvement for cyclists, both soft and hard measures. Through a local workshop, involving both NGOs, representatives from the commercial sector and the municipality, Kalmar wants to find inventive solutions. The municipality will contact regional and national organisations and institutions to disseminate project results in Sweden.

Kalmar takes the role as leader for component 3.

The City of Gdansk has acquired extensive experience while implementing various elements contributing to an urban cycling system since 1997. The City of Gdansk was subject to a Bicycle Policy Audit (BYPAD) certification and is considered to be a leading Polish city concerning the development of cycling infrastructure. It is ready and eager to share the experience in promoting active mobility in urban areas among other Polish and foreign urban areas.
In the abc-project the city wants to improve cycling conditions and enhance the importance of the environmental friendly transport modes. The pilot actions will be disseminated in the whole region and beyond, demonstrating the development opportunities for cities to become more attractive for residents, visitors and investors. The City of Gdansk takes leadership for component 4. The city will approach people employed in the mass media industry.
Gdansk has about 457.000 inhabitants. The city is the capital of Pomerania in North of Poland at the Baltic Sea.

PUMA - Polish Union of Active Mobility

The Polish Union of Active Mobility (Polish acronym - PUMA) is an innovation oriented, covering all Poland, organisation of local governments – towns, cities, communes and poviats interested in improvement of conditions and promotion of all forms of active mobility. It has been established and has its official seat in the city of Gdańsk.

The basic aim of the association is the improvement of conditions and promotion of active mobility, that is all forms of satisfying the daily transport needs assuming the use of natural human energy, either by itself or in combination with public transport means, such as e.g. walking, cycling or roller skating.

PUMA realises its statutory aims first of all acquiring extrastructural funds of the EU within international project consortia. They are devoted to activities influencing the improvement of the quality of public space and living conditions as well as enhancing the investment, recreational and tourist attractiveness of areas subordinated to the jurisdiction of its members.

Currently the PUMA associates 13 ordinary members: City of Gdańsk, Gdynia, Elbląg, Tczew, Starogard Gdański, Malbork, Pruszcz Gdański, Communes of Trąbki Wielkie, Nowy Staw, Cedry Wielkie, Przywidz, Smołdzino and Poviat Lęborski, including within the scope of its activities over 1,1 million residents of Poland.

MV Bike - The network of cycling friendly towns in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

MV bike is a new association of bike friendly municipalities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It was created in 2009 and has no legal entity so far. At the moment more than 60 municipalities are members. The association is managed by the Hochschule Wismar. Hochschule Wismar assures the dissemination of project results to municipalities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The associated organisation will contribute own experiences and approaches from different projects. MV bike aims to improve the dissemination of the abc.multimodal project idea and results on the regional level. The cooperation promotes the search for strategic and sustainable partnerships in the South-Baltic-Region. The cooperation will focus on participation in project-workshops to share experiences, invitation of project-partners to MV Bike workshops or commission meetings to disseminate results, mutually use of communication channels like links to MV Bike websites.

UBC Commission on Transportation

The Union of the Baltic Cities (UBC) was founded 1991 in Gdansk. More than 100 cities around the Baltic Sea are members. The Commission on Transportation is involved in a number of transport-related issues connected with public transport, cycling, road safety and mobility management. Some of the main areas of interest are very well connected with the project approach (e.g. urban transport policy and Integration of public transport, development of cycling routes and habits, promoting better transport solutions for environment and citizens).
The UBC Commission on Transportation will improve the dissemination of the abc.multimodal project idea and results to the macroregion of the Baltic-Sea-Region. The cooperation promotes the search for further strategic and sustainable partnerships in the Baltic-Sea-Region. The cooperation focuses on participation in project-workshops to share experiences, invitation of project-partners to workshops or meetings of the Commission on Transportation to disseminate results, mutually use of communication channels like links to the websites.
